Flogging and opening another case for political prisoner Sina Zahiri
On Monday, October 3, 2022, the Kachui court issued a flogging sentence for political prisoner Sina Zahiri and filed a lawsuit against him. He was sentenced to 74 lashes for delaying his return to prison after his leave.

Prison
Prison conditions
A report on the situation at Sanandaj Central Prison after the extensive arrests of recent protests. After nationwide protests erupted over the murder of Mahsa Zhina Amini, hundreds of citizens were arrested in the cities of Kurdistan Province and transferred to Sanandaj’s security detention center and central prison. The transfer of this large number of detainees to prison has resulted in a high number of prisoners, causing many problems for prisoners and detainees.
The General Directorate of Prisons organization of Kurdistan province, in cooperation with security agencies, has set up a committee to manage the situation, and the head of this committee is Mehrdad Abbasi, the Information Protection officer of the Provincial Prisons Organization. Other members include Kolivand, head of the Prison Protection Unit, Amini, the prison guard, Abbasi Falegari, the head of the Prison Inspection, and Mehdi Ghavami, a prison personnel
Mehrdad Abbasi, who was previously in charge of the Prison Information Protection, has played a role in the suspicious deaths of two prisoners for common crimes, Khosrow Jamalifar and Aram Zamani, in the past few years.
The transfer of hundreds of detained protesters to prisons has resulted in high prison density and consequently severe shortages of accommodation space, severe reduction in rations, lack of necessary sanitary facilities, and even a lack of items available at the prison’s shop. These issues sparked protests on October 1, 2022, and a fierce clash between prisoners and the prison protection unit, which has been accompanied by severe repression and beatings of prisoners.
Prison guards raided various wards of the prison after protests and severely beat the protesting prisoners with batons.
The prison’s population was about 650 before the protests began, but following the transfer of hundreds of detainees to the prison, the prison’s population has risen to over 1,000, while its capacity is about 400.
In addition, on several occasions, the detainees of the recent protests have been beaten by the Protection Unit, which Mehdi Ghavami has played a leading role in this matter.
The condition of the prison has been reported to be extremely inappropriate in the past two weeks. About 200 protesters are being held in the prison’s sports facility, while others have been transferred to other wards inside the prison.
Following the transfer of detainees to the prison’s public wards, the daily commute of these wards has been banned, and each ward has been converted into a public cell to hold 40 to 120 people.
Also reportedly, the detained protesters are handed over to security agencies on a periodic basis every day and later returned to prison while severely tortured. (Kurdistan Human Rights Organization- October 3, 2022)
Lawyers’ barriers to act on detainees’ cases
For days, many are concerned about the unreached cases of detainees, the cases of the detainees of the recent protests, for which a lawyer is still to be appointed or if they have a lawyer, they are still not permitted to act on them. According to some statements, many of the lawyers have not been able to enter the prosecutor’s office to initiate the process. After a few weeks they still have no news of what is going on. Though a group of detainees are deprived of having a lawyer and are not indicted, but they face another important issue, not having enough space and gears at the prison or the detention center. Now considering the wave of recent arrests these problems have become more evident.
Amir Raisian, lawyer, too, talked about the issue: “The news coming from the detention centers is not good. This means that most of them do not have proper sleeping place, health facilities, food storage or possibility to buy food and proper health facilities, etc. There are shortages. The conditions are inappropriate, and we have no hope that the prison’s environment will be an environment for rehabilitation at the moment. If the slightest thing happens to a prisoner, in terms of physical health or anything else, the responsibility lies with the judiciary officials and prison authorities.
We could not even get inside the prosecutor’s office
Seyed Ali Mojtahedzadeh, lawyer, said in an interview with “Sharq” about the process of handling the case of Hoda Tawhidi, Zahra Tawhidi and Alireza Khoshbat, who were arrested in recent days: these three are members of the Ittihad Party; A party with a certificate that operates within the framework of the law. We could not do a specific follow-up.
The rights of detainees should be respected
This lawyer continues: Currently, based on the information that the family of these people whom I accepted to represent, (have provided) their 10-day detention order has been extended again. Based on previous experiences, I think they have been charged with collusion and propaganda against the system. According to the calls that people made to me during this period, a number of detainees have not been charged yet.
Most of the lawyers failed to meet their client
Mojtahedzadeh points to the obstacles to follow up on their clients’ conditions and adds: Most of the lawyers these days could not meet with their clients, which is not legal. Unfortunately, the Security Prosecutor’s Office blocked the way from the very first steps and will not allow a lawyer in… Why did they take all the cases to a prosecutor’s office that has only four investigators… About 90% of the detainees, their crime is disturbing public order, which is a non-security charge.
Amir Raisian adds: “Even now, the issue that the country is dealing with is whether Ms. Mehsa Amini’s legal rights were respected or not during her detention. Regardless of the answer, imagine that we are faced with the legal rights of hundreds of people who are now detained.” (Sharq state-run daily- October 4, 2022)

The General Prosecutor demands “confrontation with cultural assault through internet”
Montazeri: The presence of 16-year-old youths in recent events is because of the virtual space
https://aftabnews.ir/fa/news/798850
The General Prosecutor, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, called the recent protests in Iran “Cultural raid”. Attacking the former authorities he said that years ago, Ali Khamenei has asked for “confronting the cultural assault through internet’ and the “National Information Network” should have been established.
The General Prosecutor stated: “At that time, when people didn’t carry out their businesses thorough the internet, we should have thought about the future so that instead of using foreign application, we would establish a domestic network getting help from our youths’ initiatives. Neglecting what the great leader had stressed on, had led us today to the point where we see that there are classes in WhatsApp and Instagram as of how to commit crimes.”
“The fact that we are witnessing the presence of 16-year-old youths in the current events is because of the virtual space.” (Aftab News state-run website- October 5, 2022)

Violence against women
Women detained during the nationwide uprising harassed and maltreated by security agents
https://www.iranintl.com/202210052163
According to the reports received, security agents persecute detained women of the popular uprising in various manners including making them completely naked for body search in front of CCTV cameras.
According to the report, more than 100 women have been kept at the gym of Varamin’s Qarchak Prison in a very poor and insanitary condition for more than 12 days while having only three bathrooms and showers, in all of which CCTV cameras were installed.
In addition, the guards constantly warned the women about their hijab, which faced the women’s resistance.
According to the report, the detainees were constantly under interrogation and the interrogators threatened them that they will be deprived of their right to call (and that for two minutes in a day).
The place had only two phone boots which worked only two hours a day. For that not all of the women could make a call.
If the detainees protested the dire condition of the prison, they were threatened that they will be kept there even longer. The tap water is salty and they have to buy the water they need to drink.
According to the report, at first, for more than 10 days the women were confined there without been allowed to go outside even for a minute. Then, women under 30 were taken to ward 8 and those above 30 years old were taken to the Quarantine Ward of the prison where only two toilet and two showers were provided for 80 detainees.
After 10 days, the women caught infections: “As there was not enough sanitary gears for women to wash their underwear and there was no proper place for them to dry the underwear, the women have become ill and are having problems. Even louses has been seen in the head of some of them.”
There is only one basin for washing the dishes of more than 80 people. There are harsh laws for boiling water to have tea and etc…and even for using the refrigerator. The women are forced to move heavy trash bags.
The lights are on round the clock both at the gym and in Quarantine Ward. Needed medication for sick women including medication for heart problems or special women problems is another tool of harassment. But they give these women tranquilizers and sleep pills without a doctor’s prescription, considering their medical files or weigh which has inflicted both mental and physical harm on these women.
Offending and humiliating women at Vozara detention center
The security forces have asked the detained women who have been taken to Vozara detention center to take of all their clothing and had conducted a total body search on them. This act was committed at the inspection room and in front of the cameras. The women have been asked to do squats (while naked) to humiliate them.
Some of the women were dragged on the ground from their hair at the time of detention as such that a big spot of their head is ripped of any hair. (Iran International- October 5, 2022)

- The Association for the Protection of Children’s Rights issued a statement condemning the use of children to suppress street protests, as well as the murder and detention of children and young people during Iran’s nationwide uprising. In its statement, the association called for an end to “violence against children” and wrote to Islamic Republic officials, “Remove your hands from the trigger.”As the Iranian people rose to a state of force, and fatigue and shortages of repression forces was seen, images of children and young people dressed as anti-insurgency Basij and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were posted on social media, sparking outrage among many users. Also, in the last two weeks, children and adolescents across Iran have been murdered, arrested, and targeted by the suppressive forces. Referring to these incidents, the Statement of the Association for the Protection of Children’s Rights in its statement indicated the use of children in military operations of street repression on the one hand, and the killing and arrest of children in recent protests on the other, indicating that “the leaders and officials of the country pay the least attention to the right to survival and the comprehensive growth of children.”Instead of protecting children’s right to survival, the association stressed that these measures have paved the way for “intensifying violence to take children’s right to life.”
The Association for the Protection of Children’s Rights also called for an immediate halt to “any violence against children”, saying it would provide free services, including child “advocacy” and psychological counseling, to children who have been “oppressed by the Islamic Republic.” (Iran International- October 4, 2022)

https://www.radiofarda.com/a/abuse-of-poor-children-to-suppress-protesters-in-iran/32066711.htmlHundreds of members and supporters of Imam Ali Society said in a statement that the Islamic Republic had given some “bags of food” to some poor children and then used them to “crush” the protesters in the streets of Iran. The statement point to the kids who were formerly taken care of by this society: “We hear from some of the kids that their friends and classmates were summoned to the streets not to defend their rights but to defend the injustice.”
The statement adds: “Instead of teaching children peace and friendship, the regime of Islamic Republic has put helmet on their heads and given batons into their hands in the most violent scenes that even seeing them would harm children.”
The statement was released after images of minors wearing helmets and carrying batons in some of the Tehran’s streets to suppress the protesters against Mahsa Amini’s death, was published. Mahsa Amini died while detained by the security police. In some of the images, these kids wear slippers and the observers say that is a sign of the poverty that their families were suffering from. Sheikh al-Islam, Sunni cleric, Abdolhamid: We strongly condemn Zahedan’s Bloody Friday crime
https://t.me/molanaabdolhamid/5169During today’s Friday prayer, on October 7, 2022, Sheikh al-Islam, (Sunni) cleric, Abdolhamid strongly condemned “The crime committed in Zahedan on the Bloody Friday” and called for “just and independent investigation” into the event as well as “legal punishment and punishment according to Sharia” by the high authorities of the country, of all the perpetrators having a role in this bloody incident.
According to a report by the Information Base of Zahedan Sunnis’ Friday Prayer Imam, cleric Abdolhamid said: “Last Friday that people came to pray, nobody even guessed what was going to happen. The Friday prayer was held in peace. A few youth went toward the police station near the mosque and threw some stones, but not only these youths were shot at, but also the people who were leaving the mosque, going to their homes.
In this event many people were martyred and many wounded. What is of most concern is that most of the killed and wounded were shot at their head and chest. This is against the law in the world. Both in Iran and other parts of the world usually they use tear gas and other equipment during protests. Even if they have to shoot they shoot at the legs. Nika Shakarami’s caseNicka’s body not permitted to be buried in Khoramabad
https://www.peykeiran.com/Content.aspx?ID=254463
Security forces did not permit that Nicka Shakarami be buried in Khoramabad. They want the body of this young girl to be buried in a remote village.
Nicka Shakarami who would be 17 today, participated 12 days ago in Keshavarz Blvd. Protests in Tehran. In her last call, she told her friend that security forces were after her. Then her phone went off and she was missing. Yesterday, after 11 days, her body was delivered to her family. (Payke Iran- October 2, 2022)
Nika Shakarami’s murder during anti-regime protests in Tehran
Nika Shakarami, a 17-year-old girl, who was present at Tehran protests in Keshavarz Blvd., as the people close to her have said, all of a sudden, disappears. After 10 days that there was no news of her, her dead body was delivered to her family on October 1, 2022.
Those close to Nika believe that she was killed during the protests. Security forces did not permit her aunt and mother to see her full body and just showed them her face, which was smashed in her nose and the mark of trauma to her head was obvious. In her death certificated “several blows by a hard object” has been mentioned as the cause of death. This is while officials say she died because she fell of a building.
None of the claims by Islamic Republic, published in the media or broadcasted in a TV program are not clear and just add to the twists.
On the other hand, while Nika was to be buried in Khoramabad, Islamic Republic’s security forces “stole” her body from the morgue and buried her at “Vaysun Village’s cemetery” in Lorestan Province, without the presence of her family and relatives.
The detention of Atash Shakarami, Nika’s aunt after she informed about her murder, pressure on her family to make TV confessions and broadcasting these confessions by IRIB, which is not unfamiliar, thoroughly shows that Nika’s murder case must be investigated by an independent international board.
https://iranhr.net/fa/articles/5512/
According to the supervisor of Tehran Province Criminal Prosecutor Office, Nika’s body was discovered by the residents of a building at 7 am of September 21, 2022. The builing is in Labbafi St., Amir Akram Intersection, Enqelab District. As the news agencies close to IRGC claim, the neighbors said that at 3.00 am they heard an object heating the ground but they were not suspicious.
In her interview with BBC Persian, Atash Karami, Nika’s aunt who lived with her in a house near Keshavarz Blvd. for a year, has said that her niece left the house to join her older sister at student dormitory. She took her birth certificate, water and a towel. The birth certificate was to be permitted to enter the dormitory, an apparently she needed the water and towel in case they shot teargas canisters. These affirm that Nika had left home to participate in the protests. This is what the Islamic Republic pressures the family to deny.
Also the Iran International TV network has announced that it has acquired the image of Nika’s aunt talking with her which shows that she has told her that she has been detained for torching her shawl. This happened the night she went missing and a few hours before her body was find.
But Rokna News Agency, affiliated with the SSF, informing about her death has said that her body has been found on the roof top of a house while her mobile and backpack was beside her. Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the IRGC, in two different reports first claimed that the body was found at the back yard of a building adjacent to the building that Nika has been seen entering it. In the second report it has stressed that according to the cameras’ tapes, based on unknown reasons, Nika has entered a half-built building with four stories pushing its door and then at three a.m. she has fallen of the roof of the building.

Those who claim that they know Nika and have received messages from her on the day of the incident, emphasize that after she disappeared, her phone was on and her Instagram became inactive a few hours after she vanished. The information about the Nika’s calls have not yet been handed over to her family.
Beside the news and various information from informed sources, including those close to her, about the horrible condition of her body including bruises, breakage due to beating in here head, nose and jaw, and also the marks of autopsy on her chest which shows that the coroner office has done investigation about the cause of death, the first ambiguity about the official information released is that why the result of the autopsy has not been handed over to her family and why was she buried during the night.

(Iran Human Rights Organization- October 6, 2022)Nika Shakarami’s mother: They have killed her, now they want to say it was a “suicide or some other accident”
https://ir.voanews.com/a/mother-nika-shakarami-iran-protests/6778510.html
In her first comment, Nika Shakarami’s mother emphasized that her daughter participated in the protests and was killed: “They have spread rumors, detained my brother and sister and put pressure on them. They made my sister to confess in front of the camera. Everybody knows that they do these kind of things.”In her video message on Thursday, October 5, 2022, Nasrin Shakarami, Nika’s mother called the measures taken by the authority and the broadcasting of her sister’s and brother’s confession as “appalling”.
She emphasized: “This is normal and we were expecting that they make all kind of allegations to acquit themselves.”
“They actually condemned themselves. There is no need for me to try hard to say that they are lying,” she added.
Mrs. Shakarami stressed: “The day my daughter went missing in the demonstration, she was killed and her body was delivered to Kahrizak morgue on the same day. The affidavit of the coroner office also says that they was killed on this date by trauma of y hard objects at her head. That’s it.”
Mentioning the she had seen the corpse, Mrs. Shakarami said: “The body of my daughter was not harmed. Her hands and legs were Ok. It was only her face. Her cheeks were broken and her teeth and the back of her head. The back had received a very hard blow as her skull was pushed inside. This is how she was killed. She was harmed in her head.”
The mother explained that on the night that Nika was missing, she went with her brother (Nika’s uncle) to the Intelligence Bureau once again: “They showed us several pictures of her corpse and told us that they had taken these pictures in the morning of September 20, 2022 and then delivered the body to Kahrizak morgue…The date was exact, the date mentioned at the Intelligence Bureau was exactly written that the corpse was delivered on September 20th. Then we returned and received the body the next day and went to Khoramabad to bury her.”
Though the family has prepared to bury her at Salehin Cemetery, according to her mother, they were threatened time and again to” bury her somewhere else”. They didn’t accept that. (Voice of America Persian- October 6, 2022)

Mahsa Amini’s father denied that Ebrahim Raisi had sympathized with his family and stated that in his call on Sunday, October 2, 2022, Raisi just said that “we will pursue the case.” Then he added that he has been just told to “wait”, while the time he was asked to wait is over.
Mr. Amini added that: “No one gives me any answer about my daughter’s death. I have referred to coroner office and related authorities time and again, but they just get rid of me.” (Radio Farda, Roydad 24 state-run website- October 2, 2022)
Lawyer of Mahsa Amini’s family: the agents who detained Mahsa had cameras attached to their outfit.
https://www.rouydad24.ir/fa/news/319504
According to Slaeh Nickbakht, lawyer of Mahsa Amini’s family: “According to clear evidences, the Ershad Patrol agents who detained Mahsa had cameras attached to their outfits. During today’s session (Saturday), there remained no time for the doctors and specialist to be introduced, so the family was not satisfied and left the session after two hours.
“According to specialists and independent experts, Mahsa’s death had nothing to do with her previous surgery which was removing a small bulk from above her eye, in fact she had no history of heart, kidney or vascular problems. Her death in an hour after the arrest is not related to any previous illnesses. Her family want to know that the blood that was below her skull, behind her neck and came out from her ear was because of what illness or trauma.
“We requested to see her file at the Kasra Hospital and question the doctors and nurses responsible for her.
“The most important issue is the films from inside the van and the outfit of the person who arrested Mahsa, beside the films from the Vozara Ershad Patrol base. “I and credible doctors and informed individuals we consulted, believe that Mahsa was decisively beaten and received blows before reaching the Ershad Patrol base. “Also there is a possibility that she was beaten at the detention center too. They can clear all these easily by playing the films of the existing cameras.” (Roydad 24 state-run news agency- October 2, 2022)
Mahsa Amini’s death explained by the head of the Judiciary.
https://www.tasnimnews.com/fa/news/1401/07/12/2783729
According to Mohseni Eje’i the head of the Judiciary: “Miss Amini was guided into the police car at 18:30, in bright daylight and while everybody including her brother and two relatives witnessed the scene.”
“Beside her relatives and the agents, 4 to 5 other persons were present. From the van, she was directly taken to the saloon that is shown in the CCTV camera,” he added.
The head of the Judiciary stressed: “Among many people present at the saloon, she moves around and speaks with people. Then it is shown in the film that she fells and in less than two minutes, the medic is there. Immediately the emergency personnel rushed to the scene and she is transferred to the hospital with ambulance. All this happened in an hour in the presence of other people.” (Tasnim state-run news agency- October 3, 2022)
Ebrahim Raisi: Mahsa Amini was not beaten, preserving human rights is our nature
Raisi: Iran is a country of freedom of expression
https://aftabnews.ir/fa/news/798864
In the course of UNGA’s 77th session in New York, Raisi has had an interview with China’s National TV network (CCTV) and China’s Global Network TV (CGTN).
Q: According to reports, a young lady has lost her life leading to protests in the cities. You have ordered investigations. How far have the investigations reached and what do you have to say to the protesters?
A: The issue is being followed up. I don’t want to express any definite result, but a group of Iran’s parliament (members) investigated the issue and expressed that there has been no beating. The ladies own physical problems has caused the death. This lady has been operated on twice before and her medical record exists. Also a group from the coroner office has investigated this event. They also have the same opinion. But right now I don’t express any definite opinion and leave that to the judge and the Judiciary.
But the point is that this kind of events happen in the West too. You see, Gaurdian daily has announced that in the course of 28 weeks, more than 80 women have lost their live for the way the police force behaved against them. Who looked into that matter? In USA, more than 1000 people have been killed by the police force during last year, who looked into that to see how they got killed!
We believe that preserving human rights is the nature of the Islamic Republic. That means far from anybody’s will, we are tasked by God and the people to preserve the lives of humans, their possessions and their rights. But the question is why thoes who are protesting now have a double-standard? This is human rights in some place and not in another place?! They are worried about this lady’s human rights, what about the other ladies? What about those thousand people? (Aftab News state-run website- October 5, 2022)
