Bipartisan senators advance measure to support Iranian protesters
The Hill, December 7, 2022

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday approved a bipartisan resolution reaffirming U.S. support for Iranian protesters and calling on the Biden administration to impose additional sanctions on Iranian officials and entities responsible for repressing the protests.

Mass protests have taken place across Iran for nearly three months after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of Iran’s morality police, who detained her for allegedly improperly wearing her hijab.

Tehran has attempted to suppress the protests, which have grown into calls for the downfall of the government, with hundreds believed to have been killed and thousands others arrested.

“It is my hope that Congressional approval of this bipartisan, bicameral resolution will help amplify the voices of the hundreds of thousands of women and men of Iran who are protesting against the brutality of one of the world’s most repressive regimes,” Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), who chairs the committee, said in a statement. Read More

‘Courageous’ young Iranians tell of their horrors while protesting against brutal regime
EXCLUSIVE – Iranian students spoke to Express.co.uk about their brutal treatment at the hands of the regime’s security forces as thousands of pupils flooded the streets for Student Day.
Express, December 7, 2022

Three young citizens have given detailed accounts of the brutal atrocities committed by the Iranian regime’s security forces against them and their peers. Despite being “shot at with bullets”, “beaten with batons” and “deprived of education” as a result of the rebellion, the brave students told Express.co.uk of the pride and “honour” they held in “fighting for freedom”, declaring that the “Iranian people’s democratic revolution will win soon”. Meanwhile, in a message to Iranian protesters, two young people imprisoned for 16 years issued a call to fellow students to “stand until the end”. Roughly 700 people have been killed since the protests began in September following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being detained by the morality police for improperly wearing her hijab. ..

Despite the threat to her safety and her life, she proudly declared herself as “one of the Resistance Units” of the People’s Mujahideen Organisation of Iran (MEK), a rebel group aiming to overthrow the regime.

She said: “I don’t know about my tomorrow, maybe I will be the next person to be killed by [Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei’s agents, but I am one of the Resistance Units of MEK.” Read More

Student Day in Iran: A Reminder of Young People’s Power to Change History
Townhall, December 6, 2022 by Mohammad Ali Sheikhi

In Iran, universities started on September 23, the fall season. But from the first day I set foot in Tehran University’s engineering faculty in 1965, the talk was about December 7 or “Shanzdah Azar” (according to the Iranian calendar). It was Student Day. Don’t be mistaken. It was not a day of celebration. It was the day of defiance against the dictatorship in Iran.

On December 7, 1953, agents of the repressive monarchy killed three students of the same engineering faculty protesting the Shah’s policies on the university campus. Although the Shah’s rule would endure for another quarter century, that day marked a significant turning point for the opposition movement. It inspired surges of activism among the Iranian people, especially students. Since then, December 7 has been commemorated as Student Day. Read More

AP, December 6, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — Struggling to maintain a steady supply of arms for its war in Ukraine, Moscow is looking to Iran once again to resupply the Russian military with drones and surface-to-surface missiles, according to two officials familiar with the matter.

There is growing U.S. concern that Russia may seek to acquire additional advanced conventional weapons from Iran, according to a National Security Council official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss U.S. intelligence.
