‘It was a warzone.’ Iranian security forces beat, shot and detained students of elite Tehran university, witnesses say, as crackdown escalates
CNN, October 3, 2022

CNN-When Farid’s friend called crying for help on Sunday, he jumped on his bike and quickly rode to Tehran’s Sharif University.
“Please come save us. We are stuck here. They are shooting at us,” his friend said.
Scenes of violence and “savagery” met him when he arrived at the campus of the elite university, he said, where hundreds of students had been trapped in the parking lot by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to videos CNN verified from social media.
“They had guns, they had paintball guns, they had batons,” said Farid, whose name has been changed for his safety.
“They were using gases… [that are] banned internationally… it was a war zone… there was blood everywhere.”
In one video posted to social media from the scene, police can be seen detaining people and carrying them on motorbikes. In another, loud bangs are heard. Read More

Statement by President Biden on the Violent Crackdown in Iran
Whitehouse.gov, October 3, 2022

I remain gravely concerned about reports of the intensifying violent crackdown on peaceful protestors in Iran, including students and women, who are demanding their equal rights and basic human dignity. They are calling for just and universal principles, which underpin the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For decades, Iran’s regime has denied fundamental freedoms to its people and suppressed the aspirations of successive generations through intimidation, coercion, and violence. The United States stands with Iranian women and all the citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery. read More

Iran’s supreme leader breaks silence on protests, blames US
AP, October 3, 2022

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded publicly on Monday to the biggest protests in Iran in years, breaking weeks of silence to condemn what he called “rioting” and accuse the United States and Israel of planning the protests.
The unrest, ignited by the death of a young woman in the custody of Iran’s morality police, is flaring up across the country for a third week despite government efforts to crack down.
On Monday, Iran shuttered its top technology university following an hours-long standoff between students and the police that turned the prestigious institution into the latest flashpoint of protests and ended with hundreds of young people arrested. read More

To Support Iranians, Abandon the JCPOA
Iranian protesters are risking their lives to overthrow the regime in Iran. The JCPOA extends a lifeline to the regime and is diametrically opposed to American interests.
National Interest, October 5, 2022 by Seena Saidian

Iran is entering its third week of nationwide protests calling for the Islamic Republic’s downfall. The Iranian regime has responded to these protests by indiscriminately killing, assaulting, and imprisoning unarmed protesters.
Though official numbers are unknown, opposition groups have reported 300 deaths and 15,000 arrests in the protests. With ubiquitous chants of “death to Khamenei” (referring to Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei) and “death to the dictator,” Iranians have made their intentions clear: they are fighting for a complete overthrow of the ruling theocracy and will not be satisfied with meaningless “reforms” that preserve the illegitimate regime.
