CNN, August 10, 2022

The US Justice Department announced criminal charges Wednesday against a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for allegedly trying to orchestrate the assassination of John Bolton, who served in senior national security positions during the Trump and Bush administrations.

The alleged plot was “likely in retaliation” for the January 2020 US air strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Justice Department said. After the strike, leaders of the terrorist organization vowed “revenge against Americans” for Soleimani’s death and publicly lashed out against then-President Donald Trump and other high-ranking officials in his administration. Talks to revive Iran nuclear deal end, produce ‘final text’
AP, August 8, 2022

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Talks to revive Tehran’s tattered nuclear accord with world powers in Vienna ended Monday as the parties closed a final text and key negotiators prepared to consult with their capitals, diplomats said.
After 16 months of torturous on-and-off indirect negotiations to restore the deal, the European Union’s foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell suggested there was no more room for negotiation on the draft now on the table.
A final decision on whether the most significant nonproliferation pact in the last quarter century can be restored rests with the Iranian and American governments, he signaled. The 2015 nuclear deal granted Iran sanctions relief in exchange for tight curbs on its atomic program. Read More

Training indicates Moscow plans to use Tehran’s military weapons to try and seize a new aerial advantage in Ukraine
The Wall Street Journal, August 10, 2022

Iran has begun training Russian officials to use its advanced drones, according to the Biden administration, the latest sign that Moscow plans to use Tehran’s military weapons to try to seize a new aerial advantage in Ukraine.
Iranian officials launched the training in recent weeks as part of an agreement for Tehran to send hundreds of drones to Russia, according to a U.S. official, who cited recently declassified U.S. intelligence.
The Biden administration first released intelligence last month on the secret talks between Russia and Iran in an effort to deter the two countries from following through on plans to use the drones against Ukrainian forces. But the recent training suggests that Iran and Russia are still preparing to send the drones into battle. Russia and Iran have rejected the U.S. allegations. Read more

tehrans-globalTehran’s Global Campaign Against Democratic Opposition Must Be Stopped
Townhall, August 8, 2022 by Ken Blackwell

It was recently revealed that Albania’s Special Court for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime has been investigating Iranian nationals in the country for the past four years, on suspicion that they have been acting as agents of the Iranian regime, with the goal of attacking and undermining Iranian opposition activists also living in the Balkan nation. In July, authorities carried out raids on several properties belonging to alleged spies and terrorist operatives and confiscated a trove of electronic devices and documents.
News of these raids and the underlying investigation should vindicate the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), which has spent the past several years fighting against a disinformation campaign that has focused on the group’s headquarters and residence in Albania. That modern mini city, known as Ashraf 3, which I had the pleasure of visiting last month, began taking shape in 2016 while around 3,000 PMOI members were being relocated from Iraq, where they had repeatedly come under attack from Iran-backed militants. The success of that relocation was a significant victory over the regime’s attempts at stamping out organized opposition, but as the present investigation makes clear, it did not prevent that campaign from continuing.
