Senate reintroduces Iran resolution in support of ‘brave’ protesters
Washington Examiner, January 27, 2023
The Senate reintroduced a bipartisan resolution in support of anti-regime protests in Iran just a day after the House of Representatives passed a concurrent resolution.
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was among the group of senators reintroducing the resolution on Thursday, saying in a release that he is proud to be joined by his colleagues in “commending the bravery of these Iranian protesters who have stood their ground against the Iranian regime for more than 130 days and counting.”…
Risch and Menendez were joined by Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Chris Coons (D-DE), and James Lankford (R-OK), along with 28 other Senate colleagues, in reintroducing the resolution.
Dr. Ramesh Sepehrrad, advisory chair of the Organization of Iranian American Communities, commended the senators “for standing with the courageous protesters in Iran and their call for democracy.”
“As the world watches Iran’s journey to freedom, it [is] imperative to hold the tyrannical regime accountable for its crimes and mass killings. This bipartisan resolution is a reflection of this fundamental principle,” Sepehrrad added. Read More
IAEA chides Iran for undeclared change to Fordow uranium enrichment setup
Reuters, February 1, 2023
VIENNA, Feb 1 (Reuters) – The U.N. nuclear watchdog criticized Iran on Wednesday for making an undeclared change to the interconnection between the two clusters of advanced machines enriching uranium to up to 60% purity, close to weapons grade, at its Fordow plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency found the change during an unannounced inspection on Jan. 21 at the Fordow Fuel enrichment Plant (FFEP), a site dug into a mountain where inspectors are stepping up checks after Iran said it would.
Fordow is so sensitive that the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers banned enrichment there. Since the United States pulled out of the deal in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions against Iran, the Islamic Republic has breached many of the deal’s restrictions on its nuclear activities. Read More
US forces intercept thousands of assault rifles, ammo, anti-tank missiles from Iran
Iran has sought to support Houthi rebels in Yemen with lethal aid via illegal weapons trafficking in the area
Fox News, February 1, 2023
The U.S. has seized thousands of rifles and nearly two dozen anti-tank missiles originating from Iran and transported via shipping routes.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported Tuesday that CENTCOM officials — in cooperation with international naval partners — successfully intercepted the transport of over 3,000 rifles from Iran to Yemen.
Alongside the rifles, authorities recovered nearly 600,000 rounds of ammunition and 23 anti-tank guided missiles.
The Jan. 15 interdiction took place in the Gulf of Oman, where CENTCOM and its naval partners seized the ship’s cargo…
The soldiers found over 3,000 assault rifles, 500,000 rounds of ammunition and 20 anti-tank guided missiles, according to The Wall Street Journal. The U.S., French and British navies have coordinated an effort to block Iran’s smuggling operations in the region. Read More
I am a former political prisoner in Iran. I worry the regime will execute female activists
Verbal condemnations of the regime must be reinforced by actions from the international community.
Dallas Moring News, January 31, 2023 by Homeira Hesami
It all sounded too familiar.
The Islamic Republic of Iran executed two more protesters in early January, despite persistent international outcry over two similar executions that were carried out in December. The latest killings sparked a fresh outpouring of public condemnation, as well as new threats of economic sanctions. Yet the following day, the regime’s judiciary proceeded to issue three more death sentences. To me, as a former political prisoner in Iran, this was like déjà vu.
In reality, dozens of other detainees are already facing charges that could also carry the death penalty, reported the Norway-based Iran Human Rights, while the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, or MEK, the leading voice for a democratic alternative to the clerical regime, reports that upward of 30,000 Iranians have been arrested since mid-September, most of whom are still awaiting charges or trial, according to the International Committee in Search of Justice.
