Iran building collapse feeds protest anger
Paris (AFP) – The deadly collapse of a building in southwestern Iran has accentuated anger over price rises and economic deprivation that sparked protests which have now lasted three weeks and show no sign of abating, observers say.
France 24, June 1, 2022
With video footage showing the use of bitter slogans against the government and even supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the protests present a hugely delicate moment for the Islamic republic’s leadership.
Protests have taken place in several Iranian cities since early May over the rise in costs of basic foodstuffs such as bread. But the Abadan building collapse added a new factor of uncertainty….
Opposition group the People’s Mujahedin (MEK), said it had confirmed protests in several provinces outside Khuzestan including Hormozgan province, Tehran, Isfahan province, and Fars in the south. Read More
Recalculating the Iran nuke deal
Biden switches from accommodation to confrontation
The Washington Times Editorial Board, June 1, 2022
Common sense yet survives. Despite President Biden’s unwise push to resurrect the moribund Iran nuclear deal, there is a red line that he has refused to cross, at least thus far. While obstinance at the negotiation table is the enemy of peace, so is submission before an implacable adversary. Score a rare point for the president.
A yearlong process of negotiation in Vienna with hard-bargaining representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran now stands at an impasse. A downcast Robert Malley, the top U.S. negotiator, described the standoff last week to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: “We do not have a deal with Iran, and prospects for reaching one are, at best, tenuous.” Read More
FBI director blames Iran for ‘despicable’ attempted cyberattack on Boston Children’s Hospital
CNN, June 1, 2022
(CNN)Iranian government-backed hackers were behind an attempted hack of the Boston Children’s Hospital computer network last year, FBI Director Christopher Wray alleged Wednesday, calling it “one of the most despicable cyberattacks I’ve ever seen.”
The FBI was able to help thwart the hackers before they did damage to the hospital’s computer network, according to Wray, but he cited it as an example of the potential high-impact hacking threats that the US faces from the governments of Iran, Russia, China and North Korea. Read More
Iran Walls In Cemetery ‘Of The Damned’ As Trial Exposes 1980s War Crimes
Radio Farda, June 1, 2022
For decades, the grieving relatives of thousands of political prisoners and regime opponents who were killed in the late 1980s were denied access to their unmarked graves at Tehran’s Khavaran cemetery.
Now, as the current authorities try to keep the lid on the war crimes that took place during the massacre, they are erecting barriers in an apparent effort to ensure no respect is paid to the victims.
Videos and images published on social media in the past week show that a high concrete wall and towering security-camera fixtures have been installed around the perimeter of the cemetery, known by many Iranians as the “place of the damned.” Read More

U.N. Nuclear Watchdog Urged to Rebuke Iran, a U.S., European Draft Shows
US News, June 1, 2022
VIENNA (Reuters) – The United States, France, Britain and Germany are pushing for the U.N. nuclear watchdog’s Board of Governors to rebuke Iran for failing to answer longstanding questions on uranium traces at undeclared sites, a draft resolution seen by Reuters showed. The move is likely to anger Iran, which generally bristles at such resolutions, and that in turn could damage prospects for rescuing the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Indirect talks on that between Iran and the United States are already stalled. Read more
