Iranian opposition leader expresses confidence about regime change ahead of New Year
The Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi released a statement on Thursday (29 December) to mark the coming New Year, in which she proclaimed: “2023 is the year of freedom for Iranian people, peace and friendship for the people of the world.”
EU Reporter, December 30, 2022

Her statement closely coincides with Iran reaching its 100th day of continuous, nationwide unrest brought on by the killing of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurdish woman at the hands of Tehran’s “morality police”. After being beaten in transit to a reeducation center she fell into a coma and was transported to hospital, where she died three days later.

Public protests over that killing began immediately in the wake of her funeral in the city of Saqqez, then quickly spread to other localities across all 31 Iranian provinces. The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK), a pro-democracy opposition group, has been tracking the progress of the uprising and has determined that it now encompasses more than 300 cities and towns. Mike Pompeo headlines Iran opposition summit as he eyes 2024 run
Independent, December 19, 2022

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo headlined a summit in support of an “uprising” in Iran, including the ongoing protests, as he works to retain his prominence in conservative circles ahead of 2024…

“Our approach began in the idea that the Iranian people must be supported in every way,” he claimed. “It’s important for the Iranian people to understand that this is not a partisan issue. It matters to every American.”

Mr Pompeo added of the demonstrations, which have occurred in Tehran and numerous other towns and cities: “Three months of powerful unyielding protests and uprisings don’t happen randomly. They’re not the product of foreign meddling. The regime loves to lie and say that it is so. These protests are the result of 40 years of organized opposition.” Read More

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards set to be labelled as terrorist group by UK
BBC, January 3, 2023

The UK is preparing to formally declare that Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) is a terrorist organisation. The legal change would mean it becomes a criminal offence in the UK to belong to the group or support its activities.

Whitehall sources said no announcement was imminent and many details remained to be sorted out. But they said it was “broadly correct” to say the government intended to proscribe the IRGC. The proscription – first reported by the Daily Telegraph – would follow a similar decision made by the US in 2019.

And it would mark a further hardening of the UK’s position towards Iran after intelligence agencies said the country posed a direct threat, citing 10 plots against British or UK-based individuals over the last year. Read More
