To my friends from the Iranian American Community of New Jersey:
I hope this note finds you all safe and healthy. As we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to keep up the fight for human rights around the world. This year has made clear that advocacy for human rights in Iran is more important than ever.
I deeply believe in an Iran with freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. Freedom House, a non-partisan think tank, estimates that in spite of the worldwide expansion of democracy, more than one-third of the world’s population does not live in a free state. This must change, and I will continue to work to spread the shared values of human rights to Iran.
As a member of the House of Representatives, I am constantly working with my colleagues, both Republicans and Democrats, to advance human rights around the world, including in Iran. Iranians must be afforded the same foundational rights as Americans are — to vote for their leaders, to speak their minds freely without fear of retaliation, and to determine the course of their country’s future. I will continue to seek justice for the victims of human rights violations, and will always advocate for a free and prosperous Iran. Sincerely, Mikie Sherrill Member of Congress
