The Organization of Iranian American Communities (OIAC) calls on United Nations member states to vote in favor of Resolution A/C.3/70/L.45, in favor of the promotion and protection of human rights in Iran. The resolution is particularly timely in light of the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran, particularly in regards to the treatment of dissidents and ethnic and religious minorities.

Members of the United Nations General Assembly should note that Iran continues to lead the world in per capita executions, and uses capital punishment against drug offenders, a punishment which is illegal under international law. The regime has also continued to crackdown on dissidents and journalists, while denying them due process or fair trials.
As noted by Ahmad Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, the human rights situation in Iran has actually “worsened” under the government of Hassan Rouhani, despite his claims of leading a moderate government. The regime in Iran continues to be one of the worst human rights violators in the world, and continues to violate the rights of the Iranian people on a systematic and institutional basis. We call on all UN GA member states to recognize the realities of human rights in Iran and condemn the brutality of this regime.
